Lhakpa Gyalzen Sherpa, born and raised in Solukhumbu, was inspired by his father, Phuri Gelje Sherpa, who has worked in the travel and trekking industry since the 1970s
Lhakpa Gyalzen Sherpa, born and raised in Solukhumbu, was inspired by his father, Phurba Gyalzen Sherpa (Phuri Gelje Sherpa), who had been involved in the travel and trekking industry since the 1970s. From a young age, Lhakpa witnessed foreigners coming to Nepal to explore its majestic landscapes. However, he also heard countless stories of casualties caused by natural disasters while adventurers attempted to scale the Himalayas. Deeply affected by the loss of lives and injuries sustained in the pursuit of exploration, he felt a strong need to improve safety measures, raise awareness, and enhance preparedness for travelers facing these extreme conditions.
Lhakpa began his career as a guide in the trekking industry, but by his early 20s, he had already established his own travel company, Sherpa Swiss Adventure. In 1989, he traveled to Switzerland for specialized training in rescue operations, medical evacuations (medevacs), and casualty evacuations (casevacs). His nine-month training with Air Glaciersprovided him with invaluable hands-on experience in mountain rescue operations. Upon returning to Nepal, he was determined to revolutionize how people experienced and navigated the country’s mountainous terrain. As a result, many alpinists and climbers began seeking his expertise, recognizing his extensive knowledge and international training.
Driven by his passion for improving safety in trekking and mountaineering, Lhakpa focused on educating both industry professionals and local communities on disaster preparedness and emergency response. He also pioneered the concept of rooftop helipads for hospitals in Nepal—an innovation that has since been replicated across multiple medical institutions, significantly enhancing emergency medical access.
Today, Lhakpa takes great pride in the services provided by Easy Heli, which he founded to make the Himalayas more accessible to both seasoned mountaineers and adventure travelers. Since its inception, Easy Heli has completed over 1,000 successful rescues and 10,000+ flights.Their strong local network, coupled with specialized training provided to local communities, ensures rapid and effective emergency response. The team works closely with airport authorities and hospitals in key regions, enabling an efficient, safe, and life-saving rescue and rehabilitation process. In critical mountain emergencies, every second counts—and Easy Heli’s commitment to speed, safety, and excellence continues to make a profound impact.”
